There’s a podcast on DZone with Greg Hinkle on JOPR / JBoss Operations Network (JON) and Application Management.

Heiko Rupp has published a guide to writing plugins for JOPR / JON.

It looks like SpringSource had their annual developer event this week; Spring are well respected for their technology – but their marketing team seem to be stuck in 2002 – Andrew Rubinger has a perspective.

Gavin King has an update on the progress of the WebBeans spec. (aka JSR-299) public review – it’s clear that WebBeans will really change the way Java EE is perceived.

Many of the components that comprise JBoss AS 5 and the future EAP 5.0 are starting to coalesce. I’ll write a fuller post over the weekend but here are some of the highlights :

JBoss Microcontainer 2.0.0 is out

Hibernate Search 3.1 is out

JBoss Cache 3.0.1 is out

JBoss Web 2.1.1 is out

RestEasy 1.0 beta 9 is out

I was in Italy last week with the core Hibernate and Seam developers – working on he roadmaps / strategy for both. It was a great opportunity to meet some of JBoss’ best and brightest and put some email addresses to faces.

Instead of the usual over-priced hotel accommodation – the venue was a house in Tuscany. As well as offering better value for the money – it allowed the team to spend *a lot* of time together – pretty important for a very distributed bunch who rarely get the opportunity to meet. The working day ran from about 10am ’til 2am and the conversation continued through lunch and dinner. Pretty good value.

Needless to say I learned a huge amount – not least about fluid-dynamics and Etruscan vinicluture.

Update

I wonder if Mike Desjardins has found a niche – popularizing Open Source technology through music. The lyrics are pretty good – though we might have to have them reviewed by the Hibernate team for technical accuracy and consistency

A different perspective on our Solar system from the NASA’s Cassini probe – the pictures are simple yet stunning.

Bill Burke will be talking about REST and how the the new Java spec. – JAX-RS can be used to write RESTful applications and services.

Richard Stallman is ranting about London Underground’s use of FOSS for their new Oyster Card system – he thinks it’s unethical because the Oyster Card could be used to invade customer’s privacy. The system is built with RHEL & JBoss. Richard should go visit pretty much any 3-letter-agency in the world – I’m sure he’d find plenty of FOSS powering their ‘business’.
